I do not have enough good things to say about this series. When I saw the book's spine poking out of my fiancée's bookshelf, I thought it was just another Marvel book. That's exactly what it (deluxe version) looks like: All black, shiny red text, and only two words "Marvel" and "Runaways." I'd seen that spine for years and mistakenly thought it was an X-Men book, perhaps about kids escaping from the mutant academy. Since the Marvel Universe often confuses me with numerous, vastly different storylines for the same characters (WTF!??!?), I decided not to jump into that quagmire.
Thankfully, my fiancée explained "Uh...no, it's an original superhero story from Brian K. Vaughan. You love him, right?" Yes, yes I do. And from there, I proceeded to read all 7 books cover to cover. "Runaways" is a vastly under-appreciated and under-read story. The writing is genius throughout, mixing comedy, action and numerous nods to superhero tropes and characters.
If you like Marvel, you'll love it, if you just like a good story, you'll love it too. I can't recommend this book enough.
